My story
Selu (Selusweyinkosi) Maqeda
Born Selusweyinkosi Maqeda, I go by Selu to ease my integration into Danish society. My name, rich with cultural significance, is a connection to my roots that I proudly carry with me. While it might be easier to shorten it, the full story of my name is a deep part of my identity, one that I look forward to sharing in due time.
Originally from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, I’ve spent a significant part of my adult life in Denmark. This cross-cultural experience has shaped me into who I am today, providing me with a unique perspective that blends my African heritage with European influences. The transition hasn’t always been easy, but it has been deeply enriching, a journey of growth, adaptation, and self-discovery.
My Career and Passion
My passion lies in the hospitality industry, where I’ve dedicated myself to creating meaningful experiences for others. Starting from the ground up in Zimbabwe, I’ve worked in various roles that have all contributed to my deep understanding of the industry. Now, as a hotel and procurement manager, I continue to build on this foundation, ensuring that I bring the best of myself to my work every day.
But my career is only one part of my story. As I navigate the demands of my profession, I’m also on a personal journey, one that involves continuous learning, growth, and the pursuit of balance. I don’t have it all figured out, and that’s okay. This blog is part of my exploration, a space where I share not just my successes, but also the challenges and lessons I encounter along the way.
My Family and Personal Journey
At the heart of my world are my two sons, Joshua and Zachary. Joshua is a curious, creative, and caring young mind, always eager to learn and explore. Zachary, full of energy and adventure, keeps me on my toes with his daring spirit and infectious smile. Being their mother is a journey of its own, one that has taught me the importance of resilience, patience, and the need to find harmony between the different aspects of my life.
While I strive for balance, I’m also learning that it’s okay to embrace the chaos, to accept that not everything will be perfect, and to grow through these experiences. This blog reflects that ongoing journey, offering insights and stories from my life as I work towards finding that elusive balance.
Uplifting and Empowering Women
Today, my focus is on uplifting and empowering other women, particularly migrant women in Denmark. I am passionate about creating a supportive community where women can share their stories, learn from each other, and find the strength to overcome the unique challenges they face. My experiences as a migrant woman have fueled this passion, and I am committed to helping others navigate their own journeys of integration, growth, and success.
As part of this mission, I plan to host networking events designed to bring women together with the purpose of uplifting one another and sharing experiences. These events will provide a platform for women to connect, support each other, and eventually help one another in advancing their careers and businesses. Through these gatherings, I hope to foster a community of empowered women who inspire and elevate each other.
