My first blog post
And the journey begins…
The most significant journey of my life was moving to Denmark. This was my first ‘big’ journey. My first time to fly and my very first time to be so far away from my normal settings. My ‘home’, my parents, siblings and my daily routine. The furthest i had traveled at this point was a trip to Zimbabwe’s neighboring country Botswana which is 195km away from ‘home’ to francistown the closest town to the zimbabwean border a little under a 3 hr drive. So Denmark was big! you can imagine.
I was overly excited about this Journey, 13 074 km away from ‘home’, a more than 24 hour trip, had a layover in London. Butterflies in my stomach mostly because i had to fly, I had no idea how that experience was going to be. It was epic though. I flew out of Harare to Johannesburg, on the 25th of January 2005, sat next to a lovely lady who had flown many times and understood how i felt at that moment. She made my trip as comfortable as could be. From Johannesburg to London and then London to Copenhagen.
I landed in Copenhagen on the 26th of January 2005 and was welcomed by my uncle and his family at the Airport. My uncle has been staying in Denmark for close to 30 years now and he is the reason behind me transitioning between these two worlds. It was a cold January night i remember, a cold breeze hit me as we walked out of the airport, i had never imagined that it could ever be that cold. My uncle had actually told me to bring a ‘jacket’ as it would be cold. I had with me the warmest jacket i could find, in my mom’s closet, but when i walked out of the airport i realized that, the jacket wasn’t really going to do me any justice! It was cold…..
